Midwife and campaigner, Anne Byrne, who worked tirelessly over the years to improve bereavement care, passed away on 20 March 2016 aged 73 at her home, following a long illness.

She was one of the first bereavement midwives in the UK and offered support, guidance and hope to bereaved families throughout Glasgow at the Queen Mother’s maternity Hospital.

Anne also worked closely with one of our local support Groups, Glasgow Sands, to support families after the death of their baby. From the beginning of Sands, she was instrumental in ensuring bereaved parents received support and had a central role to play in shaping the future of improving bereavement care.

Anne was awarded an MBE for services to Nursing and Midwifery (Glasgow) in 2001 and was also nominated in 2004 for the Evening Times Scotswoman of the Year Award for her work in the midwifery field and followed on from her campaigning to save the Queen Mum's hospital from closure.
